Live & Webcast Auction Help
A DoveBid Live auction is a traditional on-location public auction where bidders must go to the stated location to bid.

A DoveBid Webcast auction is a transformation of a traditional auction where bidders all over the world can competitively bid at the same time as those at the auction location - from their desks, saving time and money on travel expenses.

Prices, minimum quantities, and increments. Opening prices and bids, minimum number of items you must purchase, and bidding increments are set by the auctioneer when the asset is placed up for sale. It all happens in real-time. For this reason, most items on DoveBid.com will NOT have a price listed.

How to Bid. There are three possible ways to bid at a webcast auction: 1) Go to the auction location and register to get a bidder number (also called "paddle"). 2) Bid electronically via Webcast by registering to get a webcast bidder number for each specific auction (see below). 3) IF YOU CANNOT PARTICIPATE IN PERSON, place an online absentee (proxy) bid in advance of the sale.

How to participate on the day of the sale. 1) click "Your Account," and then "Event Registrations" in the top navigation bar. Under the auction you want, click the "Click here to download" webcast software link. 2) Call the "Auction Conference Phone Number" and give the operator the Show Number and, if required, the Show Password (this is different than your personal ACCOUNT password). 3) Listen for the lot you want and then press *1 on your telephone keypad to bid (raise your hand). Your hand stays up until you lower it by pressing # (pound) on your telephone keypad.

Steps to Webcast Bidding
To participate in a DoveBid webcast auction, follow these easy steps (see below for additional details):
  1. Register to create account, agree to terms & get bidder number.

  2. Download software & log-in to service

  3. Before bidding, confirm your telephone works

  4. Call the teleconference number

  5. When ready, bid using your telephone keypad (*1 to raise and # to lower)

Register to create account, agree to terms & get bidder number

  1. Click "Register to Bid" on the right side of the auction's details page.

Note: Typically, registration begins 1-2 weeks before the event and closes 1-2 hours before the end of the event.

  2. Complete the forms and agree to the terms.

NOTE: There may be costs associated with bidding. Creating a website account is free. It allows you to use our Alert features. All other event-specific activities (securing a bidder number or placing a proxy bid) may require a credit card and may have associated fees. Please refer to the sale's specific terms and conditions. Before your credit card is required, it will be clearly indicated whether your card will be 1) authorized for validation or charged, 2) for how much is the transaction, and whether the fee is refundable.

  3. Go to Event Registrations under the Your Account section of the website. Here you will find your bidder number, the auction teleconference number, and links to download the webcast software.

  4. If you cannot register or if this page keeps claiming "you are not registered for any events," please look here for common problems.
Each account gets one bidder number per auction. Users need to secure a bidder number for EACH auction separately.

To bid electronically, you must register online. Bidder numbers obtained from the physical auction site cannot be used online.

If you experience difficulties registering, please contact Customer Service

Download software & log-in to service
This optional service enables your computer screen to automatically change to display the lot currently up for bid.
  1. Download the auction-specific version of the auction software by clicking the "Download Software" link on the Event Registrations page. We recommend you download the software 1-2 hours before the auction begins. This download will put all of the equipment images and descriptions onto your computer for viewing during the auction.

  2. Connect to the online webcast service by double-clicking the auction software icon on your computer's desktop. Now enter the registration information located on the Event Registrations page and click "OK" to join the auction.
If the auction is in progress, you will now see the asset currently up for bid. If the auctioneer combines multiple lots into one, your screen will quickly change to display each of the lots currently for sale.

Note for Apple Macintosh users: The slide show software is not compatible with the Apple platform. Macintosh users CAN STILL BID, but must manually follow along using the Equipment Catalog.

First time bidders, we recommend you download and log-on to the Webcast at least 1 hour prior to the starting time. Otherwise we recommend you login 30 minutes prior to start or 20 lots prior to the lot that interests you. This allows the auction software to pre-load images for best performance during the auction.

Before bidding, confirm your telephone works
If you are new to webcast bidding or are using a new telephone, take 30 seconds to call the DoveBid Webcast Test Center and verify the tones from your telephone work properly with our software.

Call one of the following numbers and follow the simple instructions provided:
English: +1 650-356-6585
German: +011 650-356-6586
Dutch: +011 650-356-6587

Call the teleconference number

  1. Using your telephone, call the Auction phone number provided in your registration information and supply the operator with the information requested.

Do not bid using a speaker or cell phone.

Call at least 10 minutes prior to the auction start time or 20 lots prior to the lot on which you wish to bid.

You cannot bid using your computer - a dedicated telephone line is the only way to be sure you are able to hear the auctioneer in real-time and compete with bidders on the floor.

  2. Once the operator connects you to the auction, you should hear the auctioneer call the lot number and a description of the asset(s) for sale.

If you are connected to the software & service, your computer screen will change automatically to display the lot currently up for bid. Other users can follow along using the asset catalog.

When ready, bid using your telephone keypad
Bidding using the telephone is similar to using your hand when you attend an onsite auction.

You raise your hand to bid by pressing " *1 " (star one) on your phone for two or more seconds.

YOUR HAND STAYS UP UNTIL YOU LOWER IT.

When you hear the auctioneer reach a price that is too high, press "#" (pound) for two or more seconds to lower your hand and get out of the bidding.

The last hand up wins the auction.

Listening & Viewing without Bidding (Keep Your Telephone Free)
If you do not wish to bid, we invite you to listen to the auction through your speakers over the Internet without the need for a separate phone line and manually view pictures and descriptions of the items for sale. Internet audio may experience delays of up to 20 seconds from the activity on the floor.

Once the auction has started, click "listen now" from the DoveBid homepage. This requires Windows Media Player.

Use the equipment catalog link on the auction's details page to see photos and descriptions of the lots for sale.

If you experience any problems, please contact Auction Center Customer Support at +1 888-865-7469 (+1 706-643-3559 outside the US).

Common Questions & Solutions
I cannot register for an auction, or the website keeps claiming "you are not registered for any events".
Please click here for known registration problems.

How can I ask the auctioneer a question during the sale?
Once the sale starts, the best way to communicate with the auctioneer is through the webcast Auction Leader who is typically at the auction site. He or she can usually relay a message to someone on the podium. To contact the webcast Auction Leader, use the auction software's message feature located in the toolbar on the right-hand side of the software. In the "Send to" dropdown box, choose the "Auction Leader." Press Enter to send your message.

Similar to other instant messaging applications, it allows you to type a note in real time. The webcast Leader will read and respond to these messages as they are able. Please note, depending on the amount of activity and responsibilities of the Leader, it may take up to an hour for a response.

NOTE: This messaging feature can not be used to place live bids or proxy bids. Please refer to the instructions on the left side of the page on every slide for these instructions.

What if something is wrong with the equipment I purchased?
When conducting an auction with thousands of lots in a compressed timeframe, it is impractical for DoveBid to verify, validate, and warrant the equipment we sell for our clients. As a result, equipment offered through a DoveBid auction is sold on an "as is", "where is", "as available" basis "with all faults" and without representations or warranties of any kind whatsoever, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, unless specifically stated otherwise. If a warranty is offered, it will be stated in the sale's terms and conditions.

For this reason, your pre-sale inspection is critical and you should perform whatever due diligence you believe is necessary prior to participating in an auction. Previewing, inspecting, and testing the equipment you intend to purchase BEFORE you bid on it can save you inconveniences.

Once you are a successful bidder, you are obligated to complete your purchase of the subject equipment by paying in full and removing the goods within the specified time.

During checkout, when items are picked-up at the dock, you or your Authorized Agent should physically inspect the equipment to confirm that it is what you purchased.

Important: If the person picking up and removing equipment from an auction or sale location will be someone other than the registered bidder at that sale (for example: riggers, packers, movers, carriers, etc.), the registered bidder must establish that person/ company as an "Authorized Agent" by completing the "Agent Release Authorization form." (Acrobat PDF)

If you are using an Authorized Agent, take the time to explain to them what you expect, what they should look for, and to call you if there are any questions about the equipment.

You or your agent will be expected to sign the auction invoice acknowledging receipt of all purchases, and all goods sold are AS IS, WHERE IS, WITH ALL FAULTS.

If the equipment is not as expected, please speak to the Project Manager of the sale. (S)he can help to resolve any issues.

Please remember, positively no refunds or credits for shortages or claims will be considered after the goods have left the premises.

What will I experience during the auction?
Once the auction starts, the auctioneer will announce the lot number and call the sale. As part of the webcast experience, you will see the lot number, item description, and an image of the lot on your computer screen automatically. The auctioneer will indicate the bidder number of the high bidder - so be sure to listen for your number when bidding. Please call at least 30 minutes prior to the auction start time or 20 lots prior to the lot on which you wish to bid.

Is your Webcast software Apple Macintosh compatible? It didn't work when I opened it.
Apple Macintosh users can bid in a webcast auction, but cannot use the Auction software part of the service. The software & service causes your computer to change in real-time with the auction, displaying a photo and description of the lot currently up for sale.

Macintosh users must listen to the auctioneer and manually flip through the equipment catalog by pressing "next" at the top of an asset page. Bidding does not currently require a computer. To participate using a Mac:

1. Register to get a bidder number and call the teleconference number provided. You can now bid at the auction by pressing the *1 ands # on your telephone.

2. Click Equipment Catalog on the right hand side of the auction's detail page. Listen to the auctioneer call the current lot#, click on that asset in the list, and press "Next" to follow along.

May I bid by proxy for a webcast auction? How can I bid if I cannot attend?
Yes, From an asset's detail page, look at the bottom of the page for a yellow 'bid box'. If the sale is accepting absentee bids, enter a price and quantity and follow the instructions.

The tones on my phone are not being recognized. How do I confirm my telephone works?
If you are new to bidding at a DoveBid Webcast or are using a new telephone, call the DoveBid Webcast Test Center number mentioned in the section above titled, "Before bidding, confirm your telephone works" to verify the tones from your telephone work properly with our software.

Do not bid using a speaker or cell phone. If you are, that is the likely problem.

If all else fails, please call 1-888-HLP-SHOW (+1 888-865-7469) or +1 706-643-3559 outside the US. Indicate your phone tones not registering.

If the system is not recognizing your bids, sometimes it turns out your timing is off. You may be pressing keys too late or too early (before the auctioneer even opens the bidding).

I repeatedly pressed *1 on my phone & my bid was not accepted by the auctioneer.
Repeatedly pressing *1 will NOT WORK because the webcast operator can not tell if that is legitimate bid. Bidders should only press the *1 key ONCE and hold it down for 2 seconds.

I used the online chat room feature and got no response.
How quickly the webcast producer can answer you depends on how much activity there is. When busy, webcast producers are unable to type a response. Please be patient.

Why does the webcast software pop to the front of my screen each time the lot changes?
Our webcast software was built specifically to make the window come to the fore of the screen at each refresh. We have experienced multiple problems with people "multitasking" or passively participating while the software is open. They inadvertently press wrong buttons, complain they missed lots, etc.

Our philosophy is: if you have the software open, you are participating in the auction, and auction participants are conducting business. Passive listeners should navigate the asset list manually and listen to the event over the time-delayed Internet broadcast.

Why can't I bid using the mouse? Why do I need to use the telephone?
Computer-based, or online "click to bid" technology is not currently offered. DoveBid has experimented with this technology, and has found the latency of Internet communications (as opposed to telephone communications) is too high and currently unacceptable to conduct real-time auctions.

The reality is many bidders are connected to the Internet using 33K and 56K connections. By the time you hear the auctioneer and click, the click is sent to our server, and the auctioneer sees and registers it - the moment is gone and the price is too high.

Please be sure DoveBid is constantly evaluating new technologies and companies who claim they can reduce the latency, however none has yet proved suitable when tested with our number of bidders and pace of the auctioneer.

I don't hear any audio after selecting "listen to the audio via the Internet option".
Click on the "telephone option" and dial the audio number provided in the dropdown dialog box. Click OK on the dialog box. You will now hear the auctioneer live from the venue site.

How do I get ready to bid on selected lots if I am listening on Internet audio?
At least 20 items PRIOR to your selected lot, you will need to do the following 1) Click the "telephone" button on the webcast software toolbar; 2) Dial the audio number in the drop down dialog box; 3) An auction audio operator will answer and ask you for your name and if you are logged onto the Internet; 4) The auction audio operator will put you into an audio conference where you can hear the live auctioneer via you telephone while the auction lot items advance in your Internet browser; 5) Now wait for the item to appear in your Internet browser and listen to the auctioneer indicate that your item is up for bid.

How do I change from listening on the telephone to listening on the Internet?
Click the "Internet" icon on the webcast software toolbar, and follow the instructions. You will hear the auctioneer on your computer speakers if the toolbar indicator says, "audio playing". You will NOT hear any audio until your computer is through preparing (caching). Don't forget to hang up the phone once you hear Internet audio.

How can I submit a bid if I lose my Internet connection?
Dial the Auction Center number in your auction email confirmation. Tell the operator that you need to speak to someone in customer support. The operator will connect you with a customer support person who will help you re-connect to the auction.

What should I do if my phone gets disconnected?
Dial back into the live audio portion using the same Auction Center phone number from your auction email confirmation.

How will the auctioneer know who is the final Internet bidder?
An on-site Webcast auction facilitator will ensure that the auctioneer has the bidder number each winning Internet bidder.

How will the on-location audience see Internet bidding?
There is a large monitor in front of the audience that displays Internet bidding activity.

Can I join the auction after the scheduled start time?
Yes, you will join the auction at the lot that is currently up for bid. This will appear on your computer screen if you are using the software and service.

What information do I need in order to join the live auction via the Internet?
You will need the following registration information: Your bidder number, the Auction (show) number, the Auction teleconference number, and if required, the Auction (show) password.

Additional Software Needed for DoveBid.com
To provide you with timely auction information, DoveBid uses file formats and services that require additional software. All software is free and easily downloaded over the Internet.

Webcast Auction Software
To participate as a bidder in a webcast auction, you need to download a small application and auction-specific content (lot descriptions and photos) to your hard drive. First-time users must download the software, while repeat bidders only need to update the content for each auction. You can download the webcast auction software from the email you receive after registering for a sales event.

Microsoft Media Player
This free software lets you play streaming and archived audio files in MP3, WAV, and Windows Media format. Use this when you listen to a DoveBid Webcast Auction over the Internet (through your speakers) or to view an asset for auction in a 'Video Plant Tour.'

Adobe Acrobat Reader
This is free and freely distributable software that lets you view and print Adobe(r) Portable Document Format (PDF) files. With Acrobat(r) Reader(tm), you also can fill in and submit PDF forms online, as well as download encrypted content from the Web and unlock it with Web Buy. DoveBid uses this file format for color brochures and other documents that need to be consistent among printers.
